Here is some information on some additional fund raisers happening in the area to give aid to the communities affected by the tornados on April 28th.
Operation No Place Like Home: The Relief Project is an idea that was designed by a group of friends from Glade Spring, VA. Our community, and neighboring communities were caught by surprise when a deadly tornado struck them in the middle of the night on April 28, 2011. Our families and friends are in the area that was affected, and no matter where we were in our lives the tornado truly hit home to us. This is our efforts to rebuild the community that built us. FEMA has denied any federal aid to Southwest Virginia, therefore our community is going to have to build itself back with no government assistance.
We are proud to announce that we have partnered with United Way of Washington County and Habitat for Humanity of Washington County to donate all of our money from this fundraiser to help rebuild the community that built us! 100% of the money donated will be channeled into our hometown and surrounding communities.
Operation No Place Like Home is looking for Celebrity Guests that could come sign autographs, auction off memorabilia, be publicly recognized as a sponsor of the event during the concert. We are hoping to bring hope to our community in this time of devastation. If you cannot give of your time, then we would love to have any signed memorabilia to auction off to raise money for this cause. Any monetary donations would be greatly appreciated as well.
We plan on marketing ourselves in every way possible to bring awareness to this event and our community. Facebook will be a strong social network for us to be able to get the word out and update people on our progress. Twitter will be another strong network for us. We plan on reaching the local news/radio stations also. Sponsorships of the event are going to be strongly sought after by numerous people. Large corporations are going to be contacted to help in monetary donations and raffle prizes. There are numerous avenues which we plan to take to ensure that this event is a success, and that both charities have enough money to make a dent in what needs to be done.
Please help support our cause of giving back to the community. A charity concert will be held on June 18th, 2011 at the Damascus Town Park. It will begin at 3 PM . Admission to the event is strictly donations. An array of musicians will be entertaining, as well as Xtreme Dance Company. Raffles, silent auctions, and local food vendors will be a couple of the fundraising opportunities available at the event. Star Appearances will be made as well.
Thanks for joining in our efforts to enhance the lives of our hometown neighboring communities. Because there truly is “No Place Like Home!”
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us, The United Way of Washington County, or Washington County Habitat for Humanity.

Food and Monetary Donations Needed
WCYB reports that Feeding America is in need of assistance after distributing over 117,000 pounds of food to the Glade Springs area.
They are in great need of monetary and food donations to help restock their shelves so they can continue to provide services to the Tornado victims of our area.
They state in the article that they can take a $1 donation and purchase $8 worth of food, so every little bit counts.

How you can help our local victims of April 17th's sever weather system
On Wednesday evening, our region was struck with a severe weather system that included tornadoes, rain and lightning storms, and large sized hail. Needless to say, communities in south west Virginia received significant damage, especially the Glade Springs community. There were many injuries and unfortunately some casualties. Property damage is extensive leaving many people without a home in our region.
The Red Cross is on the front lines assisting people where they can, but they are always in need of help to be able to continue their service. Below is their statement on the event and also some contact numbers where you can hopefully offer donations yourself.
Red Cross Mountain Empire Chapter
The Mountain Empire Chapter is currently helping those affected by the early morning tornado in the Glade Spring/Chilhowie area. A shelter is currently open at Emory and Henry College in the gymnasium, and our Emergency Response Vehicle is serving meals to those affected in Glade Spring area. Several Damage Assessment teams are working in the area to assess damage and individual financial assistance will begin once the assessment is complete.
The Red Cross mobilizes the generosity of the public through our work on the frontlines of a disaster, but we need your help to ensure we can continue to be there. Please consider a donation today. You may donate online or by calling our chapter at 276-645-6650 and dial 0 for the operator. Thank you!
In addition you can also call the shelter itself in Emory at 276-944-6835 and ask for Elaine, Kelly, or Kristen. They say they need anything people can donate. Diapers in particular, but also need plastic forks, spoons, plates, prayers etc…
Due to these recent unfortunate event we are going to focus our May 14th event on raising money and items for the local Red Cross. In addition to entry fees, we will also accept other donations like the ones mentioned above (however please note that they specifically stated that they are not accepting clothing donations). For large donations, such as a full box of diapers, you will be admitted and also receive a Fight for Hope bracelet for your donation.
So spread the word about our event, or if you can't make it please make a donation to your local Red Cross today!
